RR Psalm 34:5 Part 4

Psalm 34:5 I sought Adonai, and He answered me, and delivered me from all my fears.
Here is the process described in our subject verse today. First, we “Darash” the Lord. That word means to pursue on a well-worn path with regularity. It is the word we use for a short teaching based on the weekly Torah reading. We begin by seeking God’s wisdom, so we can learn His ways.
Deuteronomy 4:29 But from there (after being scattered) you will seek (M’vaqesh - search for) Adonai your God and you will find Him, when you seek (Darash - frequently pursue) Him with all your heart and with all your soul.
God’s response is to answer us. (In Hebrew - Anah, which is remarkably similar to our English word “answer.”) Anah comes from the Hebrew word Ayen, which means “eye.” Psalm 32:8 I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go. I will give counsel—My eye is on you. God has His eye on you, and is therefore committed to answer when we pursue Him. Jeremiah 33:3 “Call to Me, and I will answer you—I will tell you great and hidden things, which you do not know.”
Let’s recap… we regularly pursue God (on the well-worn path) and He will see to providing us with the answers we need, for the purpose of delivering (Natzal) us from fear. The Hebrew word for deliverance (Natzal) means to be snatched out of trouble, or saved from a trap. Psalm 50:15 “Call upon Me in the day of trouble. When I rescue you, you will honor Me.”
Lastly, the Hebrew word used here for “fear” is not the usual fear, “Yireh,” but a much less talked about fear, the fear of being displaced in a strange land. Not knowing the language or customs, how to handle money or even to get around can be intimidating. This Hebrew word for fear is “Megurah,” which is related etymologically to “Gur” meaning stranger or sojourner. We are warned in Scripture not to make it hard for them.
Exodus 23:9 “Do not oppress an outsider, for you know the heart of an outsider, since you were outsiders in the land of Egypt.
This is all about communication. We pursue God on well worn paths and He answers us according to His wisdom to set us free from traps set for strangers.
Psalm 37:3 Trust in Adonai and do good. Dwell in the land, feed on faithfulness. 4 Delight yourself in Adonai, and He will give you the requests of your heart. 5 Commit your way to Adonai. Trust in Him, and He will do it.
