Psalm 35:2,3 – Part 2

Psalm 35:2 Take hold of shield and buckler, and rise up to my help. 3 Draw out also a spear and battle-axe. Stop those who pursue me. Say to my soul: “I am your salvation.”

What in the world is a “buckler?”  In Hebrew, it is a “Tzinah” (Tzadi-Nun-Hey).  The word describes a large shield or a pointed hook or barb.  It is a word that can even be used as a modifier to describe snow as in Proverbs 25:13. (Ever heard of “biting cold?”)  In the Hebrew of verse 3, there is a spear (Chanit), but the “battle-axe” seems to be an English addition without anything of the such in Hebrew.

While that may all be interesting, the most spiritually significant phrase is at the end of verse 3 where it says, “Emor L’Naf’shi Yeshua’taych Ani.”  The translation is, “Say to my soul, ‘I am your salvation.’”  Oh Lord, open deaf ears, and open blind eyes, that all Israel might both hear and see that the person of Yeshua HaMashiach is the long-awaited promised Messiah of Israel.

Yeshua appeared to His disciples in the resurrection, and though they saw Him resurrected as flesh and blood, still they did not believe… Luke 24:38  Then He said to them, “Why are you so shaken? And why do doubts arise in your heart?  Then, after they gave him a piece of fish to eat… Luke  24:44 Then He said to them, “These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you—everything written concerning Me in the Torah of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” 45 Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.

We aren’t told exactly which scriptures (there are too many), let’s just highlight one of my favorites… Deuteronomy 18:15 Adonai your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your midst—from your brothers. To him you must listen…. 19 Now whoever does not listen to My words that this prophet speaks in My Name, I Myself will call him to account.  The rabbis have thought this to be a reference to Joshua, but I believe it is a reference to the greater “Yehoshua,” Who is name is “Yeshua.”  In what way is Yeshua like Moses?

Numbers 12:6 “Hear now My words!” He said. “When there is a prophet of Adonai, I reveal Myself in a vision, I speak to him in a dream. 7 Not so with My servant Moses. In all My house, he is faithful. 8a I speak with him face to face, plainly and not in riddles. He even looks at the form of Adonai!

Yeshua stands alone as the One Who meets this standard prophesied by Moses.  John 17:1 Yeshua spoke these things; then, lifting up His eyes to heaven, He said, “Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, so the Son may glorify You.”

Let’s pray… Oh Lord, may You say to my soul and all our souls, “I am Your salvation.”  May we receive it as the good news that it is, so that we may believe unto salvation.  Romans 10:9 For if you confess with your mouth that Yeshua is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.  In Yeshua’s name.  Amen!

Shalom shalom.
