RR Psalm 40:12(11) Part 10
(Early) Shabbat Shalom,
Psalm 40:12 Adonai, do not withhold Your compassions from me. Let Your mercy and Your truth always protect me..
The Hebrew starts with “Atah YHVH” meaning “You are the Lord.” Why does he say this. Is the Lord likely to forget, (hint: He never “forgets” anything.) or is David reminding himself? Of course, David is reminding himself (and us when we read it) that the Lord is sovereign. Psalm 47:9 God reigns over the nations. God sits upon His holy throne.
And there it is again, God’s “mercy and truth.” “Mercy” is “Chesed” in Hebrew, usually translated as “lovingkindness.” It is again coupled here with truth. Yeshua is the manifestation of both grace and truth. John 1:14 And the Word became flesh and tabernacled among us. We looked upon His glory, the glory of the one and only from the Father, full of grace and truth.
There is something else mentioned in this verse. “Rachmanot” is translated as “compassions.” This is actually built from the Hebrew word for womb, the place that gives birth to new life. And while that new life is developing, the womb provides the protected environment to nurture it. This is the blessing of God’s compassions toward us.
Psalm 119:155 Salvation is far from the wicked, for they do not seek after Your decrees. 156 Great are Your mercies, Adonai. Restore my life with Your judgments.
This life giving protection was only mentioned once in all the blessings spoken by Jacob over his sons. And to whom would you imagine this blessing was assigned? That’s right, none other than Joseph.
Gen 49:22a A fruitful son is Joseph, a fruitful son beside a spring… Genesis 49:25 from the God of your father who helps you, and Shaddai who blesses you, with blessings of heavens above, blessings of the deep that lies below, blessings of breasts and womb. 26b May they (blessings) be upon Joseph’s head, upon the crown of the one set apart from his brothers.
Joseph was a type of Yeshua with a crown, a kinsman redeemer. Even so, Yeshua was actually born of the tribe of Judah. When the servant, Joseph, comes together with the royalty of Judah, (Genesis 49:10 The scepter will not pass from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until he to whom it belongs will come. To him will be the obedience of the peoples.) that is Messiah Yeshua, who protects His people with mercy and truth. Shalom shalom.
